Apache Warrior Pg. 17 |
“Dahteste” |
Dahteste was an Apache warrior who rode with the band of the Cochise in southern Arizona as well as with Geronimo. Dahteste was fluent in English and acted as messenger and translator for the Apache. She became a mediator and trusted scout at times for the U.S. Cavalry and was instrumental in negotiating Geronimo's final surrender to the U.S. Cavalry in 1886. The horse on her shawl is a symbol of Lozen, her Apache friend and fellow warrior.
